abstract = {Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a biotic disease of unknown origin, transmitted by aerial vectors and buds that affects sweet oranges and tangerines cultivars budded on Rangpur lime, and Volkamer and Rough lemons rootstocks. The same cultivars onto Cleopatra and Sunki mandarins, trifoliate orange and Swingle citrumelo are asymptomatic. The objective of this study was to evaluate nine selections of citrumelo regarding tolerance to CSD and their effects on growth and production of Valencia sweet orange trees cultivated without irrigation. A completely randomized design with nine treatments (citrumelos) and five replicates, each plot represented by one tree. After 16 years in the field, no tree showed symptoms of CSD or bud union ring between the scion and the rootstock. After 14 yields, the trees onto Swingle, W-2, F80-7 and F80-8 yielded the highest productions and W-2 and F80-7 induced yearly production and did not show alternate bearing. The W-2, Swingle and F80-7 citrumelos induced the largest trees and the F80-5, F80-3 and F81-18 the smaller trees. Although they do not induce high fruit production per tree, they have the highest production efficiencies, and F80-5 motivated early production and a smaller canopy diameter, enabling greater planting density.},

Fruit quality was evaluated by physicochemical attributes. 'Cravo' confirmed its good yield performance. Despite the lower number of trees, the 'Mazoe' rough lemon rootstock induced the highest fruit yield. The 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' hybrid and 'Volkameriano' lemon favored the highest trees survival, whereas 'Indio' citrandarin and 'Cravo' lime resulted in intermediate levels. The 'San Diego' and 'Riverside' citrandarins induced shorter tree with a high yield efficiency and a higher alternate bearing index, respectively. Fruits with less juice and mass were induced, respectively, by 'Riverside' citrandarin and 'Volkameriano' lemon. It can be concluded that the 'Mazoe' rootstock induces a higher fruit yield and 'Cravo' x 'Cleópatra' and 'Volkameriano', a greater survival. In addition, all rootstocks, except 'Riverside' and 'Volkameriano', induce fruit that meet the minimum quality requirements.},

abstract = {As in several fruit crops, citrus trees with decreased size allow for a higher planting density, which may lead to higher productivity and facilitate operations such as harvesting and spraying. The use of dwarfing rootstocks is one of the most feasible methods for tree size control, but few commercial varieties are available to date. In this work, the long-term performance of Valencia sweet orange grafted onto 51 hybrid citrus rootstocks was evaluated in rainfed cultivation at 6.0 m × 2.5 m tree spacing in Northern São Paulo State, Brazil. About a third of the evaluated hybrids were classified as dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks, that is, respectively inducing a relative canopy volume of <40% and 40-60% compared with the standard rootstock, the Rangpur lime Santa Cruz selection. The production efficiency and soluble solids concentration were conversely related to the canopy volume. Three citrandarins of Sunki mandarin (TSKC) × Flying Dragon trifoliate orange (TRFD) were grouped within the most productive dwarfing rootstocks. Other hybrids that expressively decreased tree size were mainly sensitive to drought; therefore, the mean fruit yield was low, indicating the need for irrigation, albeit fruit quality was high. Estimated productivity on the selected TSKC × TRFD rootstocks would double to an average of 40 t·ha−1·year−1 if tree spacing was adjusted to the smaller tree size. Although the HTR-208 citrandarin and the LCR × CTSW-009 citrumelimonia were as vigorous as the Santa Cruz Rangpur lime, they induced an outstanding fruit yield due to their highest tolerance to drought and, hence, can be considered for rainfed cultivation at wider tree spacing.},

abstract = {ABSTRACT The search for alternative rootstocks to the ‘Rangpur’ lime tree is a challenge to the sustainability of citrus in the Tabuleiros Costeiros (Coastal Tablelands) of Northeastern Brazil. New varieties should meet high drought tolerance with water deficit, cohesive soils, resistance to citrus diseases and inducing high production of fruit. In this work, the performance of ‘Pera’ sweet orange was evaluated on ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin and 27 hybrid citrus rootstocks in Umbaúba, Sergipe. A local selection of the ‘Rangpur’ lime was the control. Planting was in 2013 at tree spacing of 6.0 × 3.0 m, without irrigation. Tree size, fruit yield and quality, tree survival rate and graft-compatibility were assessed until 2019. Experimental design was completely randomized blocks with 29 treatments, three replicates and four plants in the plot. Two selection indices were applied to the data to assist in decision making. The ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin induced similar cumulative fruit yield in relation to the ‘Rangpur’ lime, suggesting a good drought tolerance of the former rootstock. The TSKC × (LCR × TR) - 073 induced slightly lower productivity, compensated by higher productive efficiency and higher concentration of soluble solids, whereas LCR × TR - 001 and HTR - 166 were highly efficient dwarfing rootstocks. The multiplicative and the rank sum indices showed high correlation, both classifying ‘Tropical Sunki’ mandarin, ‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime, LVK × LCR - 010 and - 038, HTR - 127, in addition to the three aforementioned hybrids, as superior to the local selection of ‘Rangpur’ lime.},

Therefore, assessing new rootstocks for ‘Pera’ in this region is pivotal for diversification purposes, potentially leading to increased competitiveness, yield and fruit quality. In this study, vegetative growth, productive performance, pest attack and fruit quality of ‘Pera’, grafted on five rootstocks, were assessed over 10 years in Northeast Brazil. The trifoliate hybrid HTR-051 conferred the highest yield efficiency to ‘Pera’, while ‘Red Rough’ lemon and LVK x LCR - 010 induced precocity, with yields exceeding 9400 kg ha−1 in the first harvest, as well as the highest cumulative yields. ‘Red Rough’ lemon, LVK x LCR - 010 and HTR-051 were notable for imparting high weight and total soluble solids to ‘Pera’ fruit. Regarding pests, the highest densities of citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora were found on the fruit of ‘Pera’ grafted on LVK x LCR - 010, despite low densities of this arthropod over the sampling period. Altogether, our results highlight ‘Red Rough’ lemon and LVK x LCR −010 as superior rootstocks for excelling in productive performance and fruit quality. In addition, HTR-051 manifests as an excellent option for high-density orchards because it induces dwarfism and high production efficiency.},

abstract = {Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate five nonparametric selection indices for the selection of hybrid citrus rootstocks grafted with 'Valência' sweet orange, using horticultural traits relevant for the juice processing industry. Forty-six rootstocks were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates and five trees in the plot, in the period from 2009-2015, in a rainfed cultivation. The means of the variables plant height, accumulated fruit yield, fruit yield efficiency, total soluble solids concentration, juice yield, and drought-tolerance were used to calculate the following indices: multiplicative index (IEi), sum of classification (IMMi), genotype-ideotype distance (DiI), and ranking indices (IRKi, based on simple means; and IRKii, based on linear normalization). The indices were efficient to classify the hybrids in relation to general performance. Spearman’s correlation showed a high similarity between most nonparametric indices, notably between IRKi and IRKii. The ranking indices, mainly IRKii, provide a more coherent classification of the hybrids, which allows of the selection of more productive and drought-tolerant rootstocks to produce high-quality fruit for processing.},

abstract = {In citrus cultivation, rootstocks are of fundamental importance and affect several characteristics of the variety used as canopy. Despite the great diversity within Citrus and related genera, the production of rootstocks in Brazil is restricted to a small number of varieties, making the citrus culture vulnerable to the appearance of phytosanitary problems. The aim of this study was to agronomically characterize fruits and seeds of seven citrandarins [Citrus sunki (Hayata) hort. ex Tanaka x Poncirus trifoliata cv. Rubidoux (L.) Raf.], obtained by controlled crossing. The orchard was installed in randomized blocks, with three replicates, in the municipality of Cordeirópolis, SP, where 20 fruits were collected in each replicate, obtained from free pollination of seven citrandarins, Swingle citrumelo and Rangpur lime. The following variables were evaluated: fruit mass, height, diameter, total number of seeds and percentage of viable seeds per fruit; number of embryos per seed, mass of one thousand seeds, number of seeds in 1.0 kg, final emergence rate, number of seedlings per seed, polyembryony rate, emergence speed index and seedling height at 60 days after sowing. For fruit size, the highest values were obtained for Swingle citrumelo. For number of embryos per seed, seedlings obtained through seed and polyembryony, citrandarin TSxPT 245 showed the highest values. Although citrandarin fruits had smaller size than fruits from commercial Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo rootstocks, characteristics related to seeds such as viability, polyembryony and emergence rate, were similar or superior, and can be considered potential new rootstocks for the production of citrus plants.},

abstract = {The objective of this study was to evaluate citrus progenies reaction to drought stress and shoot emission capacity in order to identify those with potential for generating hybrids that can be used as rootstocks, mainly in the Coastal Tablelands of the Brazilian Northeast, where the rainfall distribution does not meet the water requirements for citrus production throughout the year. The Citrus Breeding Program of Embrapa Cassava and Fruits conducted controlled crossings having as female parents the ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime (RSCL) and the ‘Sunki of Florida’ mandarin (SFM), and as male parents, besides this mandarin, the ‘Indio’ (IDC) and ‘Riverside’ (RSC) citrandarins, ‘Thomasville’ citrangequat (THOM), ‘Swingle’ citrumelo (SWC), ‘Argentina’ citrange (AGC) and ‘Benecke’ trifoliate orange (BKTO). The hybrids generated were visually evaluated in the period from 2011 to 2014 for drought stress and water use capacity, on the basis, respectively, of leaf curling, evaluated at the end of periods of intense drought stress, and shoot emission, determined immediately after the occurrence of rains following those intense stress periods. The hybrids of RSCL were less sensitive to drought stress, and the SFM mandarin generated hybrids with good water use, due to their good shoot emission capacity in response to water deficit. This is an indication of the capability of this mandarin to produce hybrids with good rehydration ability.},

abstract = {Background: Phytophthora nicotianae Breda de Haan (Phytophthora parasitica Dastur) causes severe damage to citrus crops worldwide. A population of citrandarins was created from the cross between the susceptible parent Citrus sunki Hort. Ex Tan. and the resistant parent Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. cv. Rubidoux, both parents and two reference rootstocks (Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo) were grafted in a greenhouse on Rangpur lime. Inoculations were performed at 10 cm and 15 cm above the grafting region and the resulting lesions were evaluated by measuring the lesion length 60 days after inoculation. As control, non-inoculated plants of each genotype were used. In addition, we evaluated the expression of 19 candidate genes involved in citrus defense response 48 h after pathogen infection by quantitative Real-Time PCR (qPCR). We mapped genomic regions of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) and Expression Quantitative Trait Loci (eQTLs) associated with resistance to P. parasitica in the linkage groups (LGs) of the previously constructed maps of C. sunki and P. trifoliata. Results: We found disease severity differences among the generated hybrids, with lesion lengths varying from 1.15 to 11.13 mm. The heritability of the character was 65%. These results indicate that there is a great possibility of success in the selection of resistant hybrids within this experiment. The analysis of gene expression profile demonstrated a great variation of responses regarding the activation of plant defense pathways, indicating that citrandarins have several defense strategies to control oomycete infection. The information of the phenotypic and gene expression data made possible to detect genomic regions associated with resistance. Three QTLs and 84 eQTLs were detected in the linkage map of P. trifoliata, while one QTL and 110 eQTLs were detected in C. sunki. Conclusions: This is the first study to use eQTLs mapping in the Phytophthora-citrus interaction. Our results from the QTLs and eQTLs mapping allow us to conclude that the resistance of some citrandarins to the infection by P. parasitica is due to a favorable combination of QTLs and eQTLs transmitted by both parents.},

abstract = {Abstract Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a highly destructive disease and has caused the eradication of millions of trees in southern Brazil within the last 15 years. In spite of the exact cause of CSD has not been determined, evidences have shown that this disease can be transmitted by biotic vectors. Disease incidence in sweet orange scions is related to the rootstock, and the combination with ‘Rangpur’ lime is the most affected. On the other hand, there are evidences of a relation between CSD affected trees and the presence of the Citrus sudden death associated virus (CSDaV) and/or Citrus tristeza virus (CTV). Based on such information, this study has been carried out to determine the presence of CSDaV and CTV, and the association between each other in eleven rootstocks for ‘Valencia’ sweet orange. The results presented herein showed differences related to the presence of CSDaV and CTV in different rootstocks for ‘Valencia’ sweet orange and no relation between the presence of CSDaV and CTV.},

abstract = {ABSTRACT: Rootstocks influence certain characteristics of the scion, such as vigor, fruit yield and quality, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic factors. In conventional citrus breeding programs, hybridization is the main method used for obtaining rootstock varieties. Between Sept and Oct 2006, controlled pollinations were carried out resulting in nine progenies, totaling 461 hybrid seedlings. The female parents were the ‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime (SCRL) and the ‘Sunki of Florida’ mandarin (SFM), while the male parents, in addition to this mandarin, were the ‘Indio’ and ‘Riverside’ citrandarins, the ‘Thomasville’ citrangequat (THOM), the ‘Swingle’ citrumelo, the ‘Argentina’ citrange (AGC) and the ‘Benecke’ trifoliate orange (BKTO). Fruit setting rates of these crosses were measured and the hybrids generated were planted in the field in 2008 and evaluated from 2010 to 2014, for the variables of plant mortality, visual vigor, plant height and trunk diameter. The descriptive statistics mean, variation range, coefficient of variation and Pearson skewness coefficient were calculated. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means of the treatments were grouped by the Scott-Knott test, both at 5 % significance. The progenies, having the ‘Sunki’ mandarin as the female parent, presented higher fruit setting rates and lower plant mortality rates than those obtained from the female parent ‘Rangpur’ lime, while zero plant mortality was observed in the SFM × BKTO cross. The crosses SCRL × SFM, SFM × BKTO, SFM × AGC and SFM × THOM have the potential to generate vigorous hybrids, resulting in rootstock varieties adapted to the landscape unit of Coastal Tableland.},
