abstract = {Citrus sudden death (CSD) is a biotic disease of unknown origin, transmitted by aerial vectors and buds that affects sweet oranges and tangerines cultivars budded on Rangpur lime, and Volkamer and Rough lemons rootstocks. The same cultivars onto Cleopatra and Sunki mandarins, trifoliate orange and Swingle citrumelo are asymptomatic. The objective of this study was to evaluate nine selections of citrumelo regarding tolerance to CSD and their effects on growth and production of Valencia sweet orange trees cultivated without irrigation. A completely randomized design with nine treatments (citrumelos) and five replicates, each plot represented by one tree. After 16 years in the field, no tree showed symptoms of CSD or bud union ring between the scion and the rootstock. After 14 yields, the trees onto Swingle, W-2, F80-7 and F80-8 yielded the highest productions and W-2 and F80-7 induced yearly production and did not show alternate bearing. The W-2, Swingle and F80-7 citrumelos induced the largest trees and the F80-5, F80-3 and F81-18 the smaller trees. Although they do not induce high fruit production per tree, they have the highest production efficiencies, and F80-5 motivated early production and a smaller canopy diameter, enabling greater planting density.},

abstract = {Drought is one of the most destructive environmental challenges for agriculture, and citrus trees are cultivated in semiarid areas. The current study used physiological and untarget mass spectrometry analysis to assess the differential response to drought and rehydration in leaves and roots of three scion/rootstock combinations in which the same scion Valencia Orange was grafted onto three different rootstocks, namely, ‘Rangpur Lime’, ‘Sunki Maravilha’ and ‘Sunki Tropical’, known to have a different response to drought. The main question to be answer was whether the soil disease tolerant ‘Sunki Tropical’ could be used as alternative to the drought tolerant/disease susceptible rootstock ‘Rangpur lime’ to cultivate citrus in semiarid areas. Thirty-seven metabolites in leaves and forty-six in roots, mainly amino acids, as well as a few carbohydrates and organic acids were found differentially expressed after drought and/or rehydration in the three combinations. Overall, the results demonstrated that the three scion/rootstock combinations responded differently at metabolite levels to water changes. The few leaf metabolites found in the scion grafted on ‘Rangpur Lime’ and ‘Sunki Maravilha’ support the respective drought avoidance and tolerance strategy, already observed in those rootstocks.‘Rangur Lime’ and ‘Sunki Tropical’ shared at roots levels several common drought response mechanisms. Moreover, the high number of differential metabolites triggered in the scion by 'Sunki Tropical' seems to be useful for overcoming the drought effects without depleting the fruit quality. From our data, we argue that ‘Sunki Tropical’ is a drought tolerant genotypes that could be used as alternative to ‘Ranpur Lime’ to sustain citrus production in semiarid areas.},

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of scion-rootstock interaction on plant resistance to P. citrophthora infection and DNA methylation patterns in ‘Pera’ sweet orange and ‘Tahiti’ acid lime grafted onto ‘Rangpur’ lime and ‘Tropical’ sunki rootstocks reinoculated with P. citrophthora. Results showed that reinoculated plants of the ‘Pera’ sweet orange/‘Rangpur’ lime and ‘Tahiti’ acid lime/‘Tropical’ sunki combinations with more and less sensitive varieties to Phytophthora, presented smaller stem lesions and increased frequency of full methylation and hemimethylation rates, compared to inoculated plants. In contrast, ‘Tahiti’ acid lime/‘Rangpur’ lime, two highly sensitive varieties, and ‘Pera’/‘Tropical’ sunki, two much less sensitive varieties, showed high increases in the frequency of hemimethylation and non-methylation levels. Results suggest that in citrus, both the scion-rootstock interaction and DNA methylation affect the response to P. citrophthora infection. Reinoculated plants, depending on the combination, showed changes in intracellular hyphae growth through the formation of sets of fibers and crystal accumulation in the periderm, cortex, and phloem. In addition, starch grain concentration was higher in reinoculated plants in comparison to inoculated plants. These findings support the assumption that DNA methylation is a plant defense mechanism and therefore may be exploited to improve the response of plants to the gummosis of P. citrophthora in citrus.},

abstract = {For citrus, there is no definition of the ideal fruit harvesting point for seed extraction. Some studies have shown the positive effect of postharvest refrigerated storage of fruits to obtain quality seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the fruit maturation stage on the germination of Swingle citrumelo (CS) seeds after the refrigerated storage of fruits and seeds. CS fruits were harvested at 180 days after anthesis (DAA); 210 DAA and 240 DAA. Fruits and seeds were stored in cold chamber for 0, 15, 30, and 45 days. Physicochemical analyses were performed on fruits (colour, soluble solids, acidity and ratio) and seeds (water content, germination, and emergence). Germination of seeds extracted from fruits harvested at 180, 210, and 240 DAA, without refrigerated storage, showed a positive correlation with colour index. The refrigerated storage of fruits and seeds extracted from fruits harvested at 210 DAA, increased the seed germination rate. Peel colour (IC) was correlated positively with the germination of Swingle citrumelo seeds. The results of this study revealed that the absence of refrigerated storage, harvesting Swingle citrumelo fruits, with ripe characteristics (end of harvest), results in a high seed germination rate. On the other hand, refrigerated storage of fruits and seeds extracted from fruits harvested at mid-harvest increases the seed germination rate.},

The following variables were determined: mass loss, fruit color index, soluble solids, total titratable acidity and fruit juice ratio. Seeds were manually extracted and dried until reaching 30% water content. Seeds were used for the performance of germination, electrical conductivity and greenhouse seedling emergence tests. Seeds from fruits harvested at 240 DAA showed higher germination and greenhouse seedling emergence percentage compared to the other treatments until 30 and 45 days of storage in cold chamber, respectively. Storage for 45 days in cold chamber of fruits harvested at 210 DAA increases seed germination rate and the percentage of seedlings from seeds harvested at 180 DAA. It could be concluded that the harvesting of ‘Limeira-IAC382’ trifoliate orange fruits should be performed when fruits reached yellowish peel and low juice ratio, aiming at obtaining seeds with physiological quality.},

abstract = {In citrus cultivation, rootstocks are of fundamental importance and affect several characteristics of the variety used as canopy. Despite the great diversity within Citrus and related genera, the production of rootstocks in Brazil is restricted to a small number of varieties, making the citrus culture vulnerable to the appearance of phytosanitary problems. The aim of this study was to agronomically characterize fruits and seeds of seven citrandarins [Citrus sunki (Hayata) hort. ex Tanaka x Poncirus trifoliata cv. Rubidoux (L.) Raf.], obtained by controlled crossing. The orchard was installed in randomized blocks, with three replicates, in the municipality of Cordeirópolis, SP, where 20 fruits were collected in each replicate, obtained from free pollination of seven citrandarins, Swingle citrumelo and Rangpur lime. The following variables were evaluated: fruit mass, height, diameter, total number of seeds and percentage of viable seeds per fruit; number of embryos per seed, mass of one thousand seeds, number of seeds in 1.0 kg, final emergence rate, number of seedlings per seed, polyembryony rate, emergence speed index and seedling height at 60 days after sowing. For fruit size, the highest values were obtained for Swingle citrumelo. For number of embryos per seed, seedlings obtained through seed and polyembryony, citrandarin TSxPT 245 showed the highest values. Although citrandarin fruits had smaller size than fruits from commercial Rangpur lime and Swingle citrumelo rootstocks, characteristics related to seeds such as viability, polyembryony and emergence rate, were similar or superior, and can be considered potential new rootstocks for the production of citrus plants.},

abstract = {Rangpur lime is the rootstock most used in Brazil, mainly due to its resistance to drought; however, it is susceptible to several diseases, requiring the search for other rootstocks tolerant to factors limiting citrus cultivation. In addition, the Brazilian legislation stipulates that citrus seeds can only be commercialized with at least 50% germination rate. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds of seven citrus rootstocks. The following citrus fruits were harvested: Poncirus trifoliata, Sunki mandarin and their hybrids –citrandarins (70, 106, 254, 299 and 310). Fruit mass, diameter and height were measured. Seeds were extracted from fruits, counting the number of normal seeds (not aborted). Seeds were dried up to 20% water content and stored for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. The physiological quality of seeds was evaluated before storage (time 0) up to 12 months of storage. The quality of Poncirus trifoliata, Sunki mandarin and citrandarins 70, 106, 254, 299 and 310 seeds was reduced during storage. However, their germination rate remained above 50%, evidencing that seeds of all rootstocks could be marketed until 12 months of storage. The new rootstocks tested have seeds with physiological quality compatible with their parents, in compliance with current legislation.},

abstract = {The 'Tahiti' acid lime (Citrus latifolia Tan.) has a great economic importance, with the state of São Paulo responsible for 70% of the Brazilian crop. There are no reports in the literature of the use of citrandarins (hybrids of mandarins with Poncirus trifoliata) as rootstock (RT) for 'Tahiti'. The RTs were not initially part of the discussion related to huanglongbing (HLB or greening) disease studies, one of the main diseases of citrus; however, there is evidence that citrus plants on different RT may differ in incidence or tolerance to the disease. This work aimed to evaluate the reaction of 'Tahiti' lime grafted onto 'Rangpur' lime (RL), 'Sunki' mandarin, Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon' (FD) and thirteen citrandarins (TS×PT) to the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, causal agent of HLB, and its vegetative and productive performance. The experiment was conducted at the Paulista Agency of Agribusiness Technology, located in Pindorama, Brazil, in the years 2016 and 2017. The biometrics of the plants, the monthly production of the fruits and the detection and quantification of the bacteria by real-time quantitative PCR were carried out. 'Tahiti' grafted onto citrandarin TS×PT 14 presented a positive result for HLB and no visual symptoms were observed in the field. The most prominent RT in relation to the accumulated production was RL, followed by citrandarins TS×PT 10 and TS×PT 121. The lowest and highest canopy volume were observed for citrandarin TS×PT 14 and RL, respectively. The evaluations made in the sixteen rootstocks allowed to verify that citrandarin TS×PT 14 presents a possible tolerance to HLB, however, its canopy volume and production are low. It can be considered as a dwarfing rootstock for 'Tahiti' lime.},

abstract = {Rangpur lime is the rootstock most used in Brazil, mainly due to its resistance to drought; however, it is susceptible to several diseases, requiring the search for other rootstocks tolerant to factors limiting citrus cultivation. In addition, the Brazilian legislation stipulates that citrus seeds can only be commercialized with at least 50% germination rate. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds of seven citrus rootstocks. The following citrus fruits were harvested: Poncirus trifoliata, Sunki mandarin and their hybrids –citrandarins (70, 106, 254, 299 and 310). Fruit mass, diameter and height were measured. Seeds were extracted from fruits, counting the number of normal seeds (not aborted). Seeds were dried up to 20% water content and stored for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. The physiological quality of seeds was evaluated before storage (time 0) up to 12 months of storage. The quality of Poncirus trifoliata, Sunki mandarin and citrandarins 70, 106, 254, 299 and 310 seeds was reduced during storage. However, their germination rate remained above 50%, evidencing that seeds of all rootstocks could be marketed until 12 months of storage. The new rootstocks tested have seeds with physiological quality compatible with their parents, in compliance with current legislation.},

abstract = {ABSTRACT Despite its interesting agricultural traits, Swingle citrumelo (Citrus paradisi Macfad. ‘Duncan’ × Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf.) rootstock exhibits severe incompatibility when grafted with Pera sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.] scions, and this fact limits its use for propagation purposes. Nonetheless, the existence of certain Pera sweet orange clones that are compatible with Swingle citrumelo represents a substantial gain for the entire citrus industry. This study investigated the compatibility between seven Pera sweet orange clones and Swingle citrumelo rootstock, regarding the presence of a necrotic line at the graft union junction, the difference in diameter between rootstock and scion, the influence of clonal cleaning by micrografting, and the horticultural performance of the selected combinations. No trees died because of grafting incompatibility, even after twenty years (trial I), except for clone CV1, or after six years and nine months (trial II) from planting. The rootstock/scion trunk diameter ratio was not related to the presence of a necrotic line in the graft-union region. Additionally, these variables did not influence fruit yield and quality, and they were not affected by clonal cleaning or pre-immunisation of the old Pera sweet orange clones.},

abstract = {There is a growing demand for high quality seeds to obtain citrus rootstocks. Normative Instruction 48 (MAPA) of September 24, 2013, requires minimum of 50% germination for the marketing of citrus seeds. Harvest season is one of the stages of seed production with great importance to ensure quality, which makes knowing its maturation process an important step. Thus, the objective of this study was to monitor physicochemical changes in IAC-863 Rangpur lime fruits in order to characterize the physiological maturity of seeds, and to define the ideal harvest point in order to obtain seeds with high physiological quality to obtain rootstocks. Physicochemical analysis of fruits (mass loss, color, soluble solids and acidity) and analysis of seeds (water content, germination and emergence) was performed. Higher germination results were observed in seeds obtained from fruits with higher color index and soluble solids content. The storage of IAC-863 Rangpur lime fruits after harvest increases germination rate, especially in mid-season fruits.},

abstract = {Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a methodology that uses water deficit induction to increase the frequency of hybrids in Citrus varieties that have a high and an intermediate level of polyembryony, respectively. The experiment examined the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotypes at three water stress intensities: 20, 40 and 100% of the pot capacity (PC). The generated fruits were harvested, and the seeds were counted. After germination, the number of nucellar and hybrid seedlings was determined. For ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotype, the highest hybrid frequency generated was 64.2%, which occurred at a PC of 40% and exceeded by 12% that occurring at a PC of 100%. For ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, the highest observed hybrid frequency was 21.75%, which occurred at a PC of 20% and was more than double the hybrid frequency of 8.57% observed at 100% of the PC.},

abstract = {The scarcity of good quality water is a limiting factor for irrigated agriculture, especially in arid and semiarid regions, where water sources generally contain high concentrations of ions. In such conditions, it is essential to cultivate genotypes with economic potential and tolerance to salinity. Considering the importance of citrus and the need to identify genetic materials that adapt to saline stress, this study evaluates the salinity tolerance of 10 genotypes with rootstock potential. For the irrigation water, five levels of electrical conductivity (ECw: 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 and 4.0 dS/m at 25 °C) were used in a randomized block design with three replications, and seed germination and growth variables, as well as physiological plant parameters, were evaluated. The germination rate of the hybrid TSKC × CTARG – 019 was the best under salt conditions, as it was the genotype with the highest tolerance to salinity in the germination stage. Salinity reduced the growth of the citrus genotypes, with the possibility of using water with EC of up to 1.6 dS/m in the rootstock formation stage. Salt stress affected the photosynthetic rate of the genotypes ‘San Diego’ citrandarin and TSKC × CTSW – 018 by reducing the stomatal conductance, restricting the diffusion of CO2 into the substomatal camera. The genotypes TSKC × CTARG – 019, TSKC × CTTR – 012 and TSKC × TRBK – 007 have the greatest potential for growth and photosynthetic apparatus efficiency when subjected to salinity.},
