abstract = {ABSTRACT The productive performance of citrus plants is limited by abiotic factors such as salinity. The response to these factors varies among rootstocks, and to guarantee sustainability of the production system, it is possible to identify the most suitable genotypes agronomically for each growing environment. Given the above, the aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime combined with different citrus rootstocks irrigated with water at different levels of salinity during the first year of fruit production. Three levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (0.14, 2.40 and 4.80 dS m-1) and 13 rootstocks (‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime, ‘Indio’, ‘Riverside’ and ‘San Diego’ citrandarins, ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and eight hybrids generated by the Citrus Breeding Program of Embrapa Cassava & Fruits). The experimental design was of randomised blocks, with four replications and one plant per plot. The fruits were harvested from 300 to 720 days after transplanting (DAT) to pots with a capacity of 60 L, which had been adapted for use as lysimeters. Fruit production was determined by weight and number, in addition to measuring the size and the thickness of the peel. It was found that water of up to 2.4 dS m-1 can be used for citrus irrigation without significantly compromising early fruit production in the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime when grafted on the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, ‘Riverside’ citrandarin, and on the hybrids TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040 and TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 059, which resulted in an earlier start to production. At the salinity level of 4.8 dS m-1, the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime proved to be more productive and less sensitive when grafted onto ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, and TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040 hybrids.},

abstract = {As in several fruit crops, citrus trees with decreased size allow for a higher planting density, which may lead to higher productivity and facilitate operations such as harvesting and spraying. The use of dwarfing rootstocks is one of the most feasible methods for tree size control, but few commercial varieties are available to date. In this work, the long-term performance of Valencia sweet orange grafted onto 51 hybrid citrus rootstocks was evaluated in rainfed cultivation at 6.0 m × 2.5 m tree spacing in Northern São Paulo State, Brazil. About a third of the evaluated hybrids were classified as dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks, that is, respectively inducing a relative canopy volume of <40% and 40-60% compared with the standard rootstock, the Rangpur lime Santa Cruz selection. The production efficiency and soluble solids concentration were conversely related to the canopy volume. Three citrandarins of Sunki mandarin (TSKC) × Flying Dragon trifoliate orange (TRFD) were grouped within the most productive dwarfing rootstocks. Other hybrids that expressively decreased tree size were mainly sensitive to drought; therefore, the mean fruit yield was low, indicating the need for irrigation, albeit fruit quality was high. Estimated productivity on the selected TSKC × TRFD rootstocks would double to an average of 40 t·ha−1·year−1 if tree spacing was adjusted to the smaller tree size. Although the HTR-208 citrandarin and the LCR × CTSW-009 citrumelimonia were as vigorous as the Santa Cruz Rangpur lime, they induced an outstanding fruit yield due to their highest tolerance to drought and, hence, can be considered for rainfed cultivation at wider tree spacing.},

abstract = {Abstract The production of mandarins is incipient in Northeastern Brazil in spite of the large regional market. Few studies have reported the performance of mandarins under the tropical conditions in Brazil, considering that, in general, the quality and yield of these fruits are more expressive in regions of subtropical and Mediterranean climates. In this work, tree size, fruit production and quality of four mandarin hybrids (‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor, ‘Murcott’ tangor and ‘Page’ and ‘Nova’ tangelo-mandarin) grafted on ‘Rangpur’ lime rootstock in Umbaúba, State of Sergipe, Brazil, were evaluated. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three replicates and three trees per plot. Planting was carried out in 2008 at tree spacing of 6.0 x 3.0 m in rainfed cultivation system. ‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor was more productive than ‘Murcott’ tangor and ‘Nova’ and ‘Page’ tangelo-mandarin, under the conditions evaluated in Umbaúba up to the eleventh year after planting. Regarding fruit quality, ‘Piemonte’ mandarin-tangor and ‘Page’ tangelo-mandarin can be indicated both for fresh consumption and for processing due to their higher total soluble solids, ratio and vitamin C content in relation to ‘Murcott’ tangor.},

abstract = {The fact that Brazilian citriculture has focused on few rootstocks poses several phytosanitary risks to the culture and has made genetic improvement programs develop hybrid genotypes to be used as novel alternatives. This study aimed at evaluating the behavior of 42 different rootstocks regarding their emergence percentage and speed in weather conditions experienced in the extreme south of Brazil. Seeds of hybrids developed by the Citrus Genetic Improvement Program (PMG Citros) at the Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura (PMG Citros) and cultivars from other citrus growing regions were sown in conical tubes filled with commercial substrate in May 2017. A thoroughly randomized design with 4 replicates, each composed of 45 sampling units, was employed. Emergence percentage and emergence speed of every genotype were evaluated and the ones with the highest emergence percentage of seedlings and the ones with the most precocious emergence were identified. All genotypes completed seedling emergence 98 days after sowing. Seeds of Trifoliata, TSKC × CTSW-041 and TSKC × CTSW-025 had the highest values of seedling emergence whereas the highest emergence speed indexes were exhibited by genotypes Trifoliata and lemon tree ‘Cravo’.},

abstract = {The objective of this study was to evaluate citrus progenies reaction to drought stress and shoot emission capacity in order to identify those with potential for generating hybrids that can be used as rootstocks, mainly in the Coastal Tablelands of the Brazilian Northeast, where the rainfall distribution does not meet the water requirements for citrus production throughout the year. The Citrus Breeding Program of Embrapa Cassava and Fruits conducted controlled crossings having as female parents the ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime (RSCL) and the ‘Sunki of Florida’ mandarin (SFM), and as male parents, besides this mandarin, the ‘Indio’ (IDC) and ‘Riverside’ (RSC) citrandarins, ‘Thomasville’ citrangequat (THOM), ‘Swingle’ citrumelo (SWC), ‘Argentina’ citrange (AGC) and ‘Benecke’ trifoliate orange (BKTO). The hybrids generated were visually evaluated in the period from 2011 to 2014 for drought stress and water use capacity, on the basis, respectively, of leaf curling, evaluated at the end of periods of intense drought stress, and shoot emission, determined immediately after the occurrence of rains following those intense stress periods. The hybrids of RSCL were less sensitive to drought stress, and the SFM mandarin generated hybrids with good water use, due to their good shoot emission capacity in response to water deficit. This is an indication of the capability of this mandarin to produce hybrids with good rehydration ability.},

abstract = {Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a methodology that uses water deficit induction to increase the frequency of hybrids in Citrus varieties that have a high and an intermediate level of polyembryony, respectively. The experiment examined the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotypes at three water stress intensities: 20, 40 and 100% of the pot capacity (PC). The generated fruits were harvested, and the seeds were counted. After germination, the number of nucellar and hybrid seedlings was determined. For ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime genotype, the highest hybrid frequency generated was 64.2%, which occurred at a PC of 40% and exceeded by 12% that occurring at a PC of 100%. For ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, the highest observed hybrid frequency was 21.75%, which occurred at a PC of 20% and was more than double the hybrid frequency of 8.57% observed at 100% of the PC.},

abstract = {Key message: Withholding irrigation at − 15 to − 25 kPa water potential significantly saved water with minimal changes in plant growth, water relations, and percentage of shippable citrus trees on drought-tolerant and -sensitive rootstocks. Abstract: We evaluated the impacts of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on plant growth, water relations, and biochemical variables of Valencia sweet orange nursery trees grafted on drought-tolerant Rangpur lime (RL) and drought-sensitive Swingle citrumelo (SC) rootstocks in pots. Irrigation was withheld to potting mix water potential of − 15 (mild RDI) and − 25 kPa (moderate RDI), with daily irrigation as control, in three graft growth periods (20–60, 61–120, and 20–120 days after grafting, DAG). Plant growth was reduced by moderate RDI, albeit RL induced more vigor than SC. SC induced higher CO2 assimilation rates and water use efficiency (WUE), regardless of the irrigation regime, and only trees grafted on RL decreased WUE under moderate RDI. Most leaf nutrient concentrations were increased with RDI intensity, while K levels were decreased by moderate RDI. Starch reserves were drastically decreased, while reducing sugars were increased by RDI in all plant organs, most notably in the leaves; roots represented the main source of carbohydrates for both rootstocks under water deficit. Starch concentration promptly recovered in all organs after restoring irrigation. Leaf proline concentration was 20 times higher at RDI, but decreased by 50% just 1 day after rehydration. Mild-to-moderate RDI resulted in water savings of 54–80%, but a 0–40% reduction in the percentage of shippable trees at 120 DAG; the biological responses were mainly related to the RDI duration. The production of container-grown citrus nursery trees in greenhouses could greatly benefit from the use of RDI, without major negative effects on tree quality.},

abstract = {Soil and water salinity cause physiological disorders in sensitive plants, such as altered gas exchange in citrus genotypes. However, it is possible to analyse these effects and to identify genotypes tolerant to salt stress. An experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the tolerance of citrus genotypes considering the irrigation with saline water during rootstock formation. The study took place under greenhouse conditions in Pombal county, Paraiba, Brazil. A randomised block design was used, with treatments arranged in a factorial scheme (5 x 8). The two factors were: [i] five salinity levels of irrigation water (0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 and 4.0 dS m-1) and [ii] eight genotypes of citrus rootstocks: 1. ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime (LCRSTC); 2. common ‘Sunki’ mandarin (TSKC) x ‘Swingle’ citrumelo (CTSW) - 028; 3. TSKC x CTSW - 033; 4. TSKC x CTSW - 041; 5. ‘Volkamer’ lemon (LVK) x ‘Rangpur’ lime (LCR) - 038; 6. ‘Sunki of Florida’ mandarin (TSKFL); 7. TSKC and 8. ‘Florida’ rough lemon (LRF). Gas exchange was evaluated at 15, 30 and 60 days after the beginning of the saline water application. High water salinity reduces gas exchange in citrus genotypes, which was more evident at 15 days from the beginning of stress. The genotypes ‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime, TSKC x CTSW - 041, LVK x LCR - 038 and ‘Florida’ rough lemon exhibit a satisfactory physiological behaviour during the first 30 days of exposure to the stress, showing moderate tolerance to salt stress. The genotypes TSKC x CTSW - 033 and common ‘Sunki’ mandarin are the most sensitive to salinity.},
